This terra red clay is similar to porcelain in that it can stretch very thin. I was practicing how tall I could throw and how thin I could make the clay when I created this vase.
The curved glaze design was created by holding the vase at an angle while I quickly poured the glaze. My goal was to not let each splash of glaze overlap but create these boundaries of negative space. It's a little bit of finesse combined with some luck to not accidentally overlap the splashes of glaze.
Notice from the birds eye view that this vase is warped. Thinner pieces are more subject to warping. I would need to be even more careful when wiring the clay off the bought or handling the drying clay in order to ensure its original circular shape.
